Shivering on the 49th Parallel

OK so I'm paraphrasing, if not downright stealing that from a song. It's not quite true, either. Looks like Tropical Storm Dean is heading our way, as a hurricane by the time it gets here. 2am Sunday night/Monday morning according to the latest update, but again, that's five days out and when has a storm ever paid attention to what the scientists and meteorological people predict? It's not like they're handicapping the Longacres Mile (is that place even still open?).

I stopped by Kirk's Supermarket on my way home tonight to stock up, I'm about a month behind. Usually I stock up some at the end of June and some at the end of July so that if we do have an alert, I can stay the hell away from the supermarket crowds of all the last-minute shoppers. All the parmalat shelf-stable milk was gone, except chocolate, and they were prepping for the surge... of shoppers, that is... by setting up endcap displays of bottled water and other essentials.

I picked up mostly small/individual sized things. Four cans of Vienna sausage, some Hormel Treet (some sort of canned ham type of thing) a couple packages of Ramen Noodles, two each of sliced pears and fruit salad, some pouches of tuna, a couple packets of gravy mix, three packets of Idahoan instant mashed potatoes and to splurge, two Pacific Gourmet pouches, one of beef stew and one of beef stew. Some handi-snack sized packets of oreos, a box of granola bars and a box of Quaker Oats oatmeal bites. Last but not least, I picked up a 36-count package of 16.9oz water bottles. That's pretty much it...

Tomorrow John's going to  tune-up and test-run the generator, fill the jerry cans and start making ice for our pair of five-day coolers (Cheers, Mark in Austin! Cheers, Zac & Steph!) When I get home from work tomorrow, I'm going to drag out and inventory the supply kit and count batteries and canned heat. Then we'll clear off the back patio and tomorrow or Friday night wheel the bbq grill inside as well. The only thing left to procure is an extra bag o' food for Tweeter, just in case.

Work is starting to spin up preparation plans, so I foresee a lot of hours in the next few days. How that's different from any other day lately, I don't know, but whatevs. :) As usual, keep your eyes and ears here for updates.
