Todd shot me an IM about a week ago and said that he finished Halo2 and he was really disapointed with the ending. I said to him “Don't spoil it for me, I'm not there yet!” and he said “I don't have to, the game will do that for you”. I mentioned it to Dusty the next day when he told me he got his hands on a copy, and he called me last Friday morning and said “Your friend Todd was right, the ending SUCKED”.
Last night after dinner I fired it up and started playing. I figured I was about 3/4 of the way through the game. Two nights ago, I got past a particularly tricky section of the game, called Fight Club and as soon as I checkpointed, I saved and exited. Last night I picked up from that point forward. I got to this point that I figured would be the end of the current level/mission because it was quite tricky. Anyway, I tried that particular spot four or five times, because I kept getting killed or falling off the platform into this Sarlac-pit sorta thing (but without the teeth) and finally I got past that point.
There was a cutscene, and I thought “OK, now I'll switch back to Master Chief now that I'm done with The Arbiter part of the story” but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. The cutscene switched over to the Master Chief, and I picked up the controller. I was getting ready to jump headfirst into the fight again, AND THE CREDITS STARTED ROLLING! WTF INDEED!
As much as the game was hyped, and pushed back, and marketed, talked about, hyped some more, and as good as the game was to play UP TO THAT POINT, overall it SUCKED. What the hell is wrong with Bungie? did they really think “hey this is an AWESOME way to finish the game!”?? “People have been waiting two years for this game, so let's make the ending as lame as we possibly can!” was more like it! I don't know. It's always hard to match a sequel, Godfather II and Empire Strikes Back notwithstanding, but this was more like Speed 2. It's like they just plain ran out of ideas, so they stopped 90% through.
At least I have Half Life 2 sitting on my desk still waiting to be opened.
