West Bay Public Beach

Another Sunday, another meeting of the Church of the Vespaholics down at Paperman's Coffeehouse down at The Strand Shopping Center. It was a bit breezy today.. OK it was windy. Not only was it windy, but it was blowing out of the south, southwest which it normally does not do. There were rollers breaking on West Bay public beach and there was chop and whitecaps as far as you could see, all the way down to George Town Harbor where you were looking straight up the ass of a huge cruise ship. Not what you normally see when you look out at the water on the west side of the island. It was SO windy that a couple times gusts of wind actually pushed my helmet back on my head and pushed my Vespa around a little on the road. The usual suspects were there, Lee, Ginny, Aldo and a couple of girls showed up on a Zip that we hadn't seen before. They were random people comng in for coffee though, not actually there to attend Vespa Church. We invited them to join us the following weekend so we'll see if we have some new recruits.

Next Sunday is also Earth Day, so we're going to try and round up a bunch of scooters and go for a ride after meeting up at Paperman's around 10:30 or so. It's kind of backwards to go for a pleasure ride on fossil-fuel-burning scooters on Earth Day, but if we raise awareness by riding around in a huge pack and cause some people to get on a clean-burning 4-stroke scooter that goes through about 1.5 gallons of gas (petrol for those of you reading in English 1.0) instead of a big gas-guzzling SUV or even an "Ivanized" beater that burns as much oil as fuel, well then at least we'll have a little peace of mind :) If you're a scooter rider here on Grand Cayman, come on out.

Coincidentally, one of the founding members of the Grand Cayman chapter of the Vespaholics, Sharon is coming down on Thursday for a visit. She's going to rent a Zip from Cayman Auto Rentals on North Church Street and come out for the ride, and I'm going to try and talk G into doing the same. He's considering getting a scooter to commute to work (smart move!) but is a little unsure as he rode a "moped" at his in-laws place and didn't feel too comfortable on it. I told him there was a MASSIVE difference between riding a chainsaw engine-powered ten-speed and a Vespa. He laughed and said he would give it a try. I keep trying to get him to come to Vespa Church for a coffee on a Sunday morning where he can tear around the empty Foster's parking lot on mine or someone's Vespa to see for himself before buying one, but work, moving and family have taken precedence. NEXT SUNDAY FOR SURE THOUGH, G! :)
