Shivering on the 49th Parallel

There was an almost-full-page ad in the Caymanian Compass today announcing their 'grand opening celebration' on Saturday, but that they were already open for business. I happened to drive by and saw all the Union Jack flags and OPEN! flags so I decided to turn in and try it out.

For starters, it's in the far-end of a strip-mall type plaza as far from Shedden Road as you can get. The parking lot is freshly paved, but the public road it opens onto is in pretty bad disrepair. I was actually worried my car was going to bottom out because of the potholes.

It's a big, open, bright seating area, and as expected, the decorations are of a nautical flair. I think a lot of their decorations actually came out of the West Indies Trading Co. store that my old company opened and subsequently sold off because it was a dog of a company, but I'll save THAt rant for a few chapters of my memoirs when I write them one day.

Since it's the first day, or second day, they really havent gotten themselves organized behind the counter yet. There were about 5-6 staff members on hand at the tills and getting the food out. The customer ahead of me asked what kind of fish they served, and the cashier didnt know and had to go get the manager. The confusion was pretty apparent, and it was about 1:15. Still lunch, but not the peak lunch hour. It was like watching two monkeys fucking a football. A lot of action and enthusiasm, but no real results.

The Manager informed the lady ahead of me that it was “whitefish” and then had to elaborate further and say it was Pollock. Rather than Cod or Halibut, which I guess is more expensive and too expensive for a fast-food eatery. Come to think of it, how the hell are they serving North Atlantic fish in the Caribbean? Pollock is also used to make imitation crab, and for some reason I seem to have “cat food” in the back of my head as well.

The food wasn't bad. The fries were good, they give you hush puppies, which I haven't had since I was in Texas, and those were pretty good, too. I don't think I'd go out of my way to go there again on purpose, but if someone else was driving and said “hey do you want to go there?” I would say “sure, why not?”
