Shivering on the 49th Parallel

8:00am - Stopped in to Thompson Shipping's office on the off chance that they had my paperwork already, as the boat was supposed to dock Sunday. They did. I ran across to Kirk's Supermarket ATM and took out KYD$850 to pay the freight charges.

8:30am - Got to work, realized I forgot my bill of sale at home after meticulously putting the envelope BETWEEN the two cell phones so I wouldn't forget it. I forgot it.

10:30am - Caught a lift out to West Bay to pick up the paperwork.

11:00am - Went to Customs, filled out my importation form and got in line.

11:45am - Got to the counter with paperwork. Had two problems: First one was that their car value book only went to 1996, and my Jeep was a 1995. They put down on my form to inspect & re-value the car, as it was damaged in-transit. The second problem was that I didn't have a letter from my insurance company writing off my old vehicle to get the reduced import duty (17% instead of 27%).

12:00pm - I tried to bypass the damage and get customs cleared in one trip, but since I had to leave and come back anyway, I decided to swing by the port and have the car inspected. They told me that my bill of sale was close enough to the value, and signed the inspection form and sent me away without a lower value for duty.

12:15pm - I went downtown to British Caymanian Insurance to see if I could get the letter for my old car and a cover letter/quote for the new car and kill two birds with one stone. There was a 90+ minute wait just to talk to someone about insurance, so I bagged it and went to Gov't House to get the duty waiver directly from them. That was the easiest part of the day.

12:40pm - Stood in line at Cayman National Bank for 20 mins because I was over my daily ATM limit. Took out another KYD$1200 to cover duty (17.5% of $4400 + $250 Environmental Disposal Fee) and then whatever the dock/cargo/trucking fees were at the port Authority.

1:15pm - Went back to Customs and stood by the window of the girl who helped me til she was done with her current customer and then stepped up to the counter. This old lady came up and got in my face and said “excuse me, but *I* was next in the queue.” all snarky-like. I told her nicely that I was already here since 10:45 this morning and was instructed to come back to this window when I returned. She said “That's not fair to cut the line, I've been waiting for-” “Hey. Life isn't fair. However you deal with that is up to you, but get out of my face with your attitude.” and she went and got back in line after that.

2:20pm - Dropped KYD$1045 in duty at the cashier's cage and went to the Port Authority. Dropped another KYD$45 on dockage, storage and trucking fees (even though my jeep was in their posession less than 24 hours) and got a pick-up ticket to get the car.

2:30pm - Got a call from my boss asking me to stop by and install two printers at our Industrial Park office “when I had a moment” which I took as a “you've been farting around on your errands for 3 hours now on company time” and hightailed it over there to get the printers sorted out.

3:30pm - Made it back to my office and grabbed a Island Taste Pattie, a coke, a bag of doritos and a Butterfinger bar out of the vending machines and inhaled it for lunch.

4:15pm - Picked up jeep at port authority lockup and drove it back to the office, left the Pimpmobile at the port to pick up later on. Assessed damage to the jeep and used some cat5 to wire the tailgate shut, and disconnected the interior light switch from the driver's doorjamb so it wouldn't drain the battery.

4:45pm - Called Miss Reina at Thompsons Shipping about the claim. She faxed me the letter to fill out, and said she would need to see the jeep and take pictures of the damage. I said I could be there in five minutes, so she waited (after 5:00) for me to come down and she explained the claims process to me and took some pictures of the damage.

5:45pm - Boss gave me a lift back up to the port to pick up the pimpmobile on his way out. I decided to leave the jeep at work out back, since I'd have to drive it without plates and/or insurance all the way out to West Bay, and then back in in the morning traffic.

6:00pm - Stopped by Al la kebab to pick up my “Al la kebab feast” that I won on Z99 this morning for winning some radio contest and took it home to eat it, have a shower, and hit the sack. I was worn-right-out!

This morning I took the jeep by Campbell's Auto to get an estimate for the insurance claim. They remembered me from August when I spent close to KYD$1000 getting my acura repaired/repainted only to have it submerged a few weeks later in the storm. For the estimate, he poked around and said that the rear tailgate needed to be replaced, the rear bumpers needed to be replaced, the driver's door fixed and some paint & supplies for a grand total of KYD$1,175.00. HOLY CRAP! So the paperwork is all submitted, I have to wait for Thompson's to forward it and rewiew it and pay me out before getting the repairs made. Meanwhile, I can't get it inspected, and without inspection I can't license it or get it insured. Grr.
