Shivering on the 49th Parallel
Friday, July 8, 2005

Last night after my last post, I hit the sheets. There was some rumbling in the distance, and the odd flash of lightning here and there, but that was it... not a lot of wind nor rain. Around 245 I awoke to the sound of rain pounding the tin roof just above me. It's kind of a cool sound, and it's cheaper than buying one of those nature sound makers.

Later on, around 530, I heard the UPS click and the alarm sound, the fan motor get quiet and the A/C kicked off. It came right back up again a few seconds later so I didnt even have to get up and go shut things off and power off the UPS to stop it's howling.

At 6:30 my alarm went off and I hit the snooze button and turned on my laptop (I strategically placed it on a chair next to my bed for quick access to NHC reports without having to get up :) ) next time the alarm went off I rolled over and checked the latest reports. Cuba got beat like a government mule (man I miss hockey play-by-play) last night, and the Cayman NHC discontinued the Hurricane Warning for Grand Cayman and downgraded to a Tropical Storm warning for the Sister Islands. They're more than likely going to issue an all-clear after the 11am(EDT) update from NOAA.

On a nicer note, since today was a “Snow Day” for a lot of people, there was no traffic on the roads. I left at 7:35 and was in town at 7:50. Unfortunately, since the removal of the warning happened while everyone was asleep, nothing was open. Cafe Del Sol was closed, so I headed to Coconut Joe's and they were closed, too. On the one morning I was hungry enough to eat breakfast, too! I don't know if Olde English Bakery is open, but if they are, they deliver! Mmmmmm. Full Monty...

Thanks for the reports, now and after Ivan. Sorry to give you a bad time about the east/west thing. It's good to know that you smart guys don't know EVERYTHING though!
