Shivering on the 49th Parallel

Ok, it's RELATIVELY cold. It's in the mid-70s and dropping into the high 60s overnight. Cold enough that having the windows open is colder than running the a/c.

Two days ago I got home(.kml) from work and opened the louvers on the front door and opened the sliding glass door to the patio. Instantly the cross breeze started pushing through, so I opened my bedroom windows as well to get some fresh air in. The temperature stayed at 77 on the thermostat and the thermometer in the hallway said 79.5. It dropped once the ambient temperature dropped with the fresh air coming in to 76.5.

Because of the wind, there are some huge (again relative) waves crashing on Seven Mile Beach, where normally it's as placid as a lake. I took a picture from the balcony yesterday, but it's still on my camera. Late that night, sitting in the living room you could hear the roar and crash of the waves on the beach, and feel the breeze from the open door & windows. Nice.

Then I walked back into my bedroom and the calming, soothing sound of the waves crashing was replaced by the howling of the HVAC units at the Ritz-Carlton across the street. And street noise of little Honda Civics with farty-sounding supertrapp glass mufflers and boomboxes worth more than the car itself (although maybe not much more than the 18" rims on it). Add to that there are a bunch of dead palm fronds hanging at the top of the tree just outside my window rattling and clanking around like a wind chime made out of two-by-fours. Oh, and the streetlights and lights from the Ritz shining in through the blinds that I pulled up so they wouldn't clatter in the wind.

I set up camp on the far side of my bed, over by the wall figuring it would be darker and quieter than the part of the bed that's in front of the window. At midnight I pulled out the eyeshade. At 2am I shoved in some noise-isolating earphones (Shure E3c). At 4am I closed one of the windows. Finally at 5:30 I got up and closed the other window and got about an hour and a half of decent sleep before getting up for work.

I wore a sweater to work. I usually keep one there at work for when the a/c gets down low (we have to keep it down because the "rack" of servers is sitting out in the open in our 'temporary' offices) but I took it home last month when I went back to Vancouver for Ork's wedding.

After lunch I had to come home and switch the Vespa for the Jeep so I could pick up John at the airport at 5, and HO-LEE SHEETROCK was it cold on the scooter! I actually kept the windows zipped up in the Jeep to keep the warmer air in! I picked up John and we stopped by Big Daddy's liquor store (I gotta get me one of them "Who ya Daddy is?" t-shirts from there one of these days) to get some Grolsch flippies and then went and had a couple drinks with Jake, our old roommate from The Ranch who's down here this week getting married.

Tonight I had to go into my storage locker and get some warmer clothes out of hiding, I have the windows closed, the ceiling fan off and an extra blankie on the bed. Hopefully this weather front will pass and the sun comes back out before Jakey's wedding on Friday.
