Shivering on the 49th Parallel
Thursday, January 27, 2005

Some of the pictures below are a bit fuzzy-focused... but keep in mind I was driving off-road in a jeep and trying to take pictures at the same time! After messing around with it a couple times, I decided to make a fixed-width table and throw the pictures in there. It looks OK at 1024x768 so if you have less than that... Too bad. It's 2005! Upgrade! (evil)

Batabano Road at first light

Batabano Road ends at Morgan's Harbor in the background. Right turn, Clyde!

This has nothing to do with anything, but the trailer says “THIEVES WILL BE SHOT ON SIGHT“ in 3 foot tall spray-painted letters. A little 'Ivan' reminder

This is the beginning of the shortcut. Notice the traffic? It's getting busier and busier each morning. Soon it will be backed up as well.

This gives you an idea about the width of the roadbed and the steep dropoffs to mangrove swamp on either side.

I've come to many crossroads in my life. Fortunately both paths lead you to the same destination here. :)

This part of the road has mangroves on both sides of the road

Followed by a meandering path past a pond/lake/swamp

And the sun makes his curtain call. Heeeeeeere's Sunny!

As you can see by the sun in different pictures, the road makes quite a few dips & doodles.

This is where the other path from the crossroads meets back up with the one I was on. Just past the car is the final turn and then down a cowpath and back into main road traffic

This is just a reminder to drive slow and take it easy. Both hands on the wheel, and keep your eyes on the road (unless you're taking photos?) ;-)
