Shivering on the 49th Parallel
Thursday, May 10, 2007
I was sitting at home tonight, watching some TV shows I recorded while I was away in Italy (yes, yes, the posts are forthcoming) when I got a call from work. I'm on call this week and unfortunately this call required an on-site visit. At 10:30. My jeep refuses to start at the moment, so I was going to have to take the Vespa in to town. I don't normally have any reservations about riding at night, so long as it's short trips.. about as far as Legendz to watch hockey is my limit and this was all the way across town by the Airport. I grabbed my iPod, put on a pair of jeans, grabbed my clear sunglasses and helmet and hit the road.

My thought process followed that since it was night, I would take the main roads and stay off the bypass (Cayman's 'highway') because it was slower and more well lit. I cruised down Seven Mile Beach into George Town and then hung a louie at Eastern Avenue, where Kirk's Grocery is. As I was passing Kirk's Home Center I was thinking to myself "hey it looks nice at night with those lights on the columns" and then I saw about 20 yards ahead a dog running across the street and potentially into my path.

I was focusing on the dog, watching him run out into the middle of the street thinking "he can't be THAT STUPID, can he?" when all of a sudden, BAM! right into my front fork. I didn't even hit the brakes. That mutt hit my front wheel and caused it to swerve to the right, which made my body swerve to the left. Once the center of gravity changed, the whole scooter started to lean over... over... over... and then topple on to it's side and launched me kinda sideways off it and onto the asphalt... At 35mph, give or take whatever speed the dog bled off me.

I remember hearing the scooter scraping along the pavement then I landed square on my side. Shortly after that I heard and then felt my helmet hit the ground and then I rolled over, sliding on my back a little before ending up on my belly staring at my still-running scooter in the middle of the road. I saw the dog turn and run back up the side street it ran out of, the little fucker.

Next I noticed the little ball from the end of my brake lever laying in the street and that's when I started thinking "Fuck! my scooter's damaged!" and then saw my iPod laying in the street a few feet away from my Blackberry and my Sony Ericsson phone was still in my pocket. All three were still functioning. I crawled on my hands and knees back to the scooter and turned it off as some cars started to slow down and stop around and ask if I was ok.

I stood up, I moved both my arms, both my legs and my head and realized that I was more or less OK. That's when I noticed the left pants leg was torn,so I looked and had a little patch of bloody skin about the size of a quarter on my left kneecap, and another smaller patch just below it. I picked up my scooter and wheeled it off to the side of the road, put it on it's kickstand and took off my helmet. I was a bit dazed, but nothing seemed to be really wrong with me. I noticed a small little pool of gasoline on the ground under my scooter, but not very much. there was some liquid on the front fairing, and I don't know what it was or where it came from, whether it was gasoline, brake fluid (I hope not) or dog blood or what.

After a couple minutes of deep (ow) breaths, I got back on the scooter and carried on to work, took care of what I needed to take care of and then called John to see where he was and if he could pick me up. We decided against going to the hospital because I didn't have any symptoms of a concussion or anything, and worst case scenario was a cracked rib for which they couldn't really do anything anyway.

We left the scooter behind Lee's shop so he could take a look at it in the morning, and then we headed home with a pitstop to make last call at Calico Jack's for a little pain relief. :) I'm in bed now and I have my cell phone, a glass of water and a bottle of advil within reach.

I'll take some pics of the damage tomorrow and post it up to flickr.

Hey Doc,
Hope all is well with you and you didn't suffer any further effects of the accident. A number of the CAG board members are going to be meeting up late June, and we would love to have you join us.
