Shivering on the 49th Parallel

Every once in awhile we get “surprised” and get a current-run movie close to it's release date in the US. The last one was The Day After Tomorrow which started here on the Monday following it's Friday US Release. We went to see if and for some reason I heard this annoying vaccuum cleaner sound throughout the whole movie. Turned out that the SUCKING NOISE was coming from the movie, because IT SUCKED.

It didn't suck as bad as Van Helsing though. That was one of the worst movies I've ever had the pleasure of sitting through. About 20 minutes into it I was just giggling constantly. At one point Darlene turned around and said 'what are you laughing at?' and I said 'Everything!' and then our whole group started laughing at the movie, too. It was about as bad as the time me and Steve went to see Hard Target at Metrotown.

The one odd thing about movies down here is that we get DVD releases about a week before they're officially released in the US. Seeing as how it never made it to the screen here, and it was one of my favorite shows as a kid, I rented Starsky & Hutch this weekend. It was hysterical. It was a total satire of the old show, but where Van Helsing tried to be 'serious' about itelf, Starsky & Hutch poked just enough fun at itself to say “yes, we know. We did it that way on purpose” like the double-date scene where Owen Wilson sings “Don't give up on us baby” which in real life was the only “hit” of David Soul's (the original Hutch). Ben Stiller was awesome as Starsky. If it had been any other pair of actors, it probably would have sucked as hard as The Day After Tomorrow. Snoop Dogg pulled off Huggy Bear perfectly, too. The way they worked the original Starsky & Hutch into the story at the end was pretty good, too. That was tricky, because that could have easily ended up as an “Uncle Batman” moment.
